Owens Intermediate School opened in August 1994 as the first intermediate school in the Alief school district. Mr. Joe Dumbrowski was assigned to be the first principal of Owens Intermediate. Mrs. Anne Malone took over this position in 1996 followed by Mr. Amador Velasquez in 2003. 2014 Owens greeted Dr. Lorena Augustus as the principal.
Owens was named for L.C. Owens who donated the land where the school was built to the Alief district.
Laval Congress Owens was born in Homer, Louisiana, on April 18, 1907. His family moved to Alief when he was a small child. Mr. Owens attended Alief schools and graduated from Alief High School in May 1924. His father, president of the Alief school board, signed his diploma.
Following graduation, Mr. Owens enrolled at the Houston School of Law and received his law degree in 1934. He was a member of the American, State and the Houston Bar Associations and was employed by Harris County from 1925 to 1948. After leaving the county’s employ, Mr. Owens became owner and chief executive officer of many different land development and title companies.
Mr. Owens married Estella Winkelmann, a 1926 graduate of Alief High School in 1930. After the death of Estella Winkelmann in 1974, Mr. Owens married Mrs. Loula Bess Johnson Burch in 1976.
Mr. Owens’ roots were in Alief and he usually spent Saturdays at his family’s farmhouse at the corner of Bellaire and Wilcrest. Mr. Owens died in October 1989.
